At 7:27am (Feb. 11) LCWC dispatched station 4-5 to 79 Pequea Valley Rd (Paradise Twp) for a dwelling. Due to the recent blizzard this made the call rather challenging. Most of the roads around the scene were inaccessible due to drifts and the location of the incident was back a long lane which was inaccessible as well. Snow plows were called in to open the lane and to also open the road-ways around the scene so apparatus could respond.
Chief 4-2 (Kurtz) was the first to arrive on scene. He reported a working fire in the roof area with smoke showing. Truck 4-2 was able to make it back the lane with E4-4-1 pulling in behind them. Crews on Truck 4-2 pulled hand-lines and attacked the fire that was in the attic. Tanker 4-4 was also able to make it back the lane and they supplied water to Truck 4-2 & E4-4-1. Water was supplied to the scene via a relay from the Pequea Creek, involving E4-5-2, E4-5-1, T4-3, E4-7-1 & E4-7-2. Additional man-power was provided by Hose 4-3, E5-2-1, E4-2-2 and E3-9-1. Rescue 3-9 was called to the scene for RIT, Air 4-8 & Amb 4-3-1 were also on scene for their services.
Despite all the challenges that crews faced the fire was limited to the attic space and an adjacent room. The house sustained heavy water damage but the residents were able to get a lot of their furniture out with the help of local neighbors. The fire was ruled to be electrical – accidental in nature courtesy of the fire marshal.
Not only was this call challenging due to the snow conditions but also because the owner of this house was one of our own KFC firefighters! A huge thank you to all who helped with this call, your efforts were greatly appreciated.
KFC was returned & available at 11:21am.
